What Is a Stair Nosing?

Understanding the intricacies of stair components is fundamental to building and installing a durable stair system that will sustain heavy foot traffic, over a long period of time, without degradation. When it comes to safety, durability, longevity, one term of import is “stair nosing.” A stair nosing is a specialized stair component, often made from metal, designed to cap the edge of a stair tread.

The 2 Major Objectives of Stair Nosings:

  1. To Enhance Stair Safety
  2. To Prolong the Lifespan of the Staircase

From a safety perspective, a stair nosing serves as a visual cue, clearly delineating the edge of each step and reducing the risk of tripping or missteps. This is especially true in dimly lit environments and/or highly trafficked areas. Moreover, nosings provide additional traction, which is particularly crucial in moisture rich environments where users may wear slippery footwear.

Beyond safety, stair nosings also protect the vulnerable edge of the stair tread from wear and tear, preventing premature deterioration and extending the overall longevity of the staircase. In commercial settings where foot traffic is heavy and continuous, investing in quality stair nosings is not just advisable but essential for ensuring both safety and structural integrity.

How to Install Stair Nosing

The process of how to attach stair nosing may vary slightly from product to product. We advise that you download the specification sheet for the specific type of stair nosing that you are trying to install. Spec sheets can be found on the downloads tab of the product page.

Custom Fabricated Metal Stair Nosing

For many years, Stair Components and Systems has manufactured its own high quality, custom fabricated metal stair nosings out of diamond plate steel (aka checker plate steel). These stair nosings can be incorporated into safety grating and bar grating stair treads, as well as traditional stair tread and stairpan designs.
